Antwerp - tighter Euro standards from 2020

Antwerp is going to tighten its Euro standards from 1 January 2020 on.

To be able to enter Antwerp for free your vehicle has to meet the following standards:

  • diesel Euro 5
  • petrol, CNG Euro 2

If your vehicle is diesel Euro 4, you can enter Antwerp after paying.

If your vehicle is diesel Euro 3 and less or petrol Euro 1 and less, you can enter the LEZ after buying a day pass. This is only possible 8 times a year!

Registration of vehicles from 2020

Some vehicles must first be registered before they can drive into the environmental zone:

  • Vehicles with a foreign number plate
  • Vehicles with a better Euro standard than specified in the vehicle registration document
  • Vehicles of people with a disability

1. Vehicles with a foreign license plate

Vehicles with a foreign license plate must be registered. This does not apply to Dutch vehicles because the city has data from the RDW.

Registration of a foreign vehicle is based on the registered Euro standard.

Example: Have you already registered your diesel vehicle with Euro standard 5 with a foreign registration in the Antwerp environmental zone? Then you don't need to do it again. The vehicle may drive into the environmental zone until December 31, 2024.

Example: Have you already registered your petrol vehicle with Euro standard 3 with a foreign registration in the Antwerp environmental zone? Then you don't need to do it again. The vehicle may drive into the environmental zone until December 31, 2027.

2. Vehicles that have a better Euro standard than stated in the vehicle registration document

This registration is only necessary for vehicles whose correct Euro standard has not been included in the DIV database. This can then be corrected in the DIV database if it is higher than the Euro standard, which was calculated on the basis of the registration date. Have you already registered a higher Euro standard for your vehicle? Then you don't need to do it again.

For example, if you have not yet registered a gasoline engine with Euro standard 2, you can do so now. This vehicle will then have access until 12/31/2024.

You do not need to register these vehicles again if they have already been registered in the Antwerp environmental zone.

3. Vehicles of people with disabilities

Vehicles of people with a disability who do not have the correct Euro standard can also drive into the environmental zone after 2020 after prior registration. The conditions that the vehicles must meet remain the same.

If you have previously registered your vehicle for the environmental zone, you must do so again after 2020 . All today's registrations are valid until December 31, 2019.

All of these registrations give access to every environmental zone in Flanders, including the environmental zone in Ghent. However, they do not apply in Brussels.

From September 2019 you can register your vehicle at www.sna.be/LEZ or buy a temporary registration there. To help people who don't have a computer, the city will host additional registration sessions in the fall.

4. Diesel with Euro standard 3 and soot particle filter no longer have access

All registrations of diesel vehicles with Euro standard 3 with a soot particle filter will end on December 31, 2019. These vehicles will no longer be allowed into the environmental zone from January 1, 2020. From then on, this is only possible with an environmental zone day ticket or an exception for people with a disability.
